Handling Postage Rate Changes

We all know postage rates tend to increase over time. Our default rates in the shipping matrix are suggestions, not set-in-stone rules. Here are some strategies other booksellers use:

  • Build part of the shipping cost into the book price

  • Consider offering free shipping for domestic shipments

  • Try to make sure your international rates are in line with current actual shipping costs

  • Use an average flat rate, accepting that some orders may cost more and others less to ship

Feel free to experiment with different rates and pricing strategies to find what works best for you. You can always update your rates as needed.

TIP: Try this method to determine the postage for the different zones in your shipping maxtrix. Weigh a random sample of books (say 20,30 books) from your categories and calculate the average of this sameple. Use your calculated average number to a get quote from the shipping couriers for the shipping zones. In our experience using an average weight of 1.5 - 2 lbs. works well for most sellers.

Large or Heavy Items

For bulky or heavy books:

  • Consider adding a note in your listing about potential additional postage

  • Most customers, especially international ones, understand the realities of shipping costs

Adjusting Your Shipping Matrix

Need to update your postage rates or delivery estimates? It's easy:

  1. Log into your bookseller menu

  2. Click on "Account" at the top of the page

  3. Select "Shipping matrix" from the drop-down menu

  4. Make your changes and don't forget to save!

Remember, entering a zero in any shipping rate field offers free shipping to that zone – it doesn't deactivate shipping. Click Here for More Shipping Matrix Info

International Shipping Programs

For full details on the Asendia shipping consolidation program, check out our help article: International Consolidated Shipping Program.

For complete information on the DHL International Expedited Shipping program, see our

Guide to International Expedited Shipping with DHL.

Both programs are applied automatically during checkout when criteria are met. However, be prepared to ship directly if needed, and always ensure your customs forms are filled out correctly. You may also request for additional postage from the customer should you opt the order out of either program.

See this article on How to Request for Additional Postage

TIP: Our system will only route books via Asendia or DHL if those rates are lower than your international rates. In most cases making sure that your international rates are set to cover your actual costs will make sure that eligible orders will be routed through Asendia or DHL.
